A Cannon. A Fusilier
A smoothbore 17th century cannon made in Sweden exposed here was found on a building site in Salaspils in 2007. This artillery weapon marked with a special sign was a part of the arsenal granted to city of Riga by Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689). Next to the cannon there are some 17th century cannon balls of various caliber and depiction of infantry soldier in uniform typical for the age in question (drawing by Linda Treija). Infantry recruited mainly from mercenaries became the core of troops in early modern Europe.
