Hillfort Ķivutkalns in Dole
Archaeological site of Doles Ķivutkalns included a Bronze Age burial ground of 231 inhumation and 20 cremation burials and a later hillfort settlement site that covered it. Hillfort set in this place was inhabited from 650 BC to 150 AD by ancient Baltic Finns (‘kivi’ = ‘stone’ in present Finnish and Estonian). The hillfort had a circular fortification system composed of a rampart constructed of stone and clay and a wooden palisade. The burial ground beneath the hillfort layer dates back to 800 – 600 BC keeping unique anthropological evidence of Bronze Age population in the Daugava valley as well as the demographic structure of inhabitants (predominated by 32 – 38 years old individuals), their health and occupations.
