A Cremation Burial of Ancient Livs

In 10th to 12th century the ancient Livs of the Daugava valley buried their people both in flat burial fields and burial mounds, a third of them being cremated burials. The dead body was put into the grave along with the tools, ornaments and weapons they used in life. After cremation of the body, a mound was constructed upon the burial site marked with a stone circle. Most of the described burial mounds were leveled in later centuries by agricultural activities in the countryside; some of these burial grounds are still preserved in forest terrains.
